Shopify, Etsy, Etc. (Website Design)

WordPress is great but it isn’t the only website platform around. Very popular too are Shopify, Wix, & Etsy. These platforms offer a way for people to ‘lease’ a website. As long as you pay the monthly/quarterly/yearly fees, you have a powerful e-commerce website platform from which to sell!

Things to consider before pursuing a managed online e-commerce platform.

Leased platforms aren’t always the least expensive long-term route to go. Over time, annual renewal fees, listing fees, payment processing fees, & advertising fees can really add up!

You also have to be careful about adhering to the platform’s rules about what & how you sell. For example, as Etsy states at https://www.etsy.com/legal/terms-of-use/#termination:

Etsy reserves the right to change, suspend, or discontinue any of the Services for you, any or all users, at any time, for any reason, including those laid out in Etsy’s policies under these Terms of Use. We will not be liable to you for the effect that any changes to the Services may have on you, including your income or your ability to generate revenue through the Services.

TLDR, Etsy, et al (they all have similar disclaimers) shed all responsibility for your business and well-being. They can move the goalposts at any time and what was once acceptable behavior may suddenly get you kicked from their platform. In my opinion, it is always better to control your own platform, such as operating your own WordPress or HTML website.

But if Etsy, Wix, Shopify, etc., is your choice, more power to you. They are powerful platforms, and fine enough for the task of e-commerce. And the popular ones are wildly popular. Everybody knows and shops them and they offer great convenience.

To move through the setup and development process quickly, it is best to have some previous experience with your platform of choice. If this isn’t a task that you have the patience to take on, I recommend letting somebody who does have the experience and time take care of the heavy lifting; setting up the website and initially populating it with an inventory of items.
